Crop View in SolidWorks: How to Focus a Drawing View

Trim a drawing view down to the region that carries the dimensions, know when a detail view is the better call, and let Sibe track each drawing revision so reviewers always open the current sheet.

You can show only the part of a drawing view that matters and hide everything around it, without creating a second view and without scaling the whole sheet. That is Crop View — a sketch boundary, one click, and the surrounding geometry is gone.

In SOLIDWORKS® 3D CAD, it is the quiet fix for a long weldment that runs off the sheet, a large frame where only the mounting face needs dimensions, or a panel layout where three of the four corners are identical and nobody needs to see them twice.

What Crop View does

A crop is a drawing-only operation. You draw a closed sketch on a view, run Crop View, and everything outside the boundary is hidden. The model is untouched, the view keeps its own scale, and dimensions inside the boundary stay attached to the geometry they were always attached to.

The distinction worth holding onto: a crop hides, it does not enlarge. The remaining geometry sits at exactly the scale it had before. If you needed the detail bigger, a crop is not the tool.

How to create a crop view

  1. Open the drawing and click the view you want to crop, so the sketch belongs to the view and not the sheet.
  2. Click Sketch in the CommandManager.
  3. Draw a closed shape around the area you want to keep — spline for an irregular region, rectangle or circle for a defined one.
  4. With the sketch still selected, go to the View Layout tab.
  5. Click Crop View.

Everything outside the boundary disappears. The crop sketch becomes a child of the view in the FeatureManager tree, so it travels with the view when you drag it and rescales when you change the view scale.

Crop view or detail view?

These two get mixed up constantly, and picking the wrong one is why a drawing gets sent back. The question is whether you need the geometry smaller in area or bigger on the page.

You can use both together. Crop a long chassis view down to the bracket end, then place a detail view off that crop to enlarge the weld prep.

Editing, removing and re-cropping

Right-click the cropped view and pick Crop View > Edit Crop to change the boundary shape, or Crop View > Remove Crop to restore the full view. The sketch is preserved when you remove the crop, so you can crop again from the same profile after you check what is outside it.

To move the crop rather than the view, edit the sketch and drag the profile. Dragging the view itself moves the whole thing, boundary included, which is usually what you want on a sheet layout but not when you are hunting for a feature that fell just outside the line.

What goes wrong

  • Crop View grayed out — the sketch is open somewhere, or it was drawn on the sheet instead of the view
  • Dimensions vanish — they were attached to geometry now outside the boundary; reattach them inside or widen the crop
  • Whole view disappears — the sketch sits off the geometry entirely; remove the crop and re-draw
  • Crop will not apply to a detail view — crop the parent view first, then create the detail
  • Annotations sit outside the boundary — notes and balloons are not clipped the way geometry is; drag them inside
  • Second crop attempt fails — a view holds one crop at a time; remove the first before adding another

The open-sketch case accounts for most of it. A spline that looks joined at normal zoom is often two endpoints a hair apart. Zoom to the join, or run Tools > Sketch Tools > Check Sketch For Feature and let SolidWorks find the gap for you.

Best practices

  • Draw rectangles for panels and frames, splines only where the region is genuinely irregular
  • Fully define the crop sketch so it holds position when the view scale changes
  • Leave a margin around dimensioned geometry — a tight crop clips extension lines
  • Crop before you dimension, so you dimension what will actually print
  • Keep one crop per view and let a detail view handle anything that needs enlarging
