Outgrowing OneDrive folders
CeiliX hit three limits running a fast-growing SolidWorks team on OneDrive folders.
Revisions living in filenames
CeiliX ran its SolidWorks files in OneDrive folders with no version control system. Each revision was a copied file with Rev A, Rev B or Rev C in the name. Renaming a file broke assembly references, so assemblies opened with suppressed components and engineers went searching manually.
A team set to double
Ten engineers worked in the same modular assemblies, with headcount planned to double within 18 months. A shared folder doesn't lock files or show who has what checked out, so nothing stopped two people from editing the same part. The last save won.
Getting designs to production and sales
Sharing a design outside the CAD team meant generating STEP files and sending them around. Production and sales saw exported snapshots, not the current model, and there was no record of what was approved and released.
