SolidWorks Hotkeys: The Shortcuts Worth Learning First

The default SolidWorks shortcuts that save the most clicks, the ones worth assigning yourself, and how to roll a single keyboard setup out to the whole team.

You can run most of a SolidWorks session without touching a menu: views, rebuilds, document switching, and your most-used tools all sit one keystroke away once you know which keys to hit. This guide covers the default hotkeys in SOLIDWORKS® 3D CAD that pay off every day, the ones worth assigning yourself, and how to roll one keyboard setup out to a whole team.

Ctrl + 8 alone is worth the habit: it squares the view to whatever face or sketch you have selected, which is where most sketching starts.

Shortcuts worth assigning yourself

Most sketch and feature tools ship unbound, and that is where custom hotkeys earn the most. Popular assignments engineers make first:

  • L for Line and C for Circle — the two entities most sketches start with
  • E for Extruded Boss/Base — the feature you reach for most in part mode
  • T for Trim Entities — sketch cleanup without leaving the keyboard
  • M for Measure — faster than hunting through the Evaluate tab
  • A key for Section View if you review internal geometry often

Keep custom keys on the left hand where possible, so your right hand stays on the mouse. And leave the Windows standards alone — Ctrl + C, Ctrl + V, Ctrl + Z, and Ctrl + S do exactly what your fingers expect, and remapping them costs more than it saves. When you assign a key that is already taken, the Keyboard tab shows the conflict so you can decide which command keeps it.

Mouse gestures: shortcuts without the keyboard

Hotkeys have a mouse-side counterpart. Right-click and drag in the graphics area and a gesture wheel appears under the cursor — flick toward a segment and that command fires. In part and assembly modes the defaults are view commands; in a sketch they are sketch entities. Set it up under Tools > Customize > Mouse Gestures, where you pick how many segments the wheel has and drag commands onto each one. Four segments you can hit without looking beat eight you have to read, so start small.

How to customize hotkeys in SolidWorks

  1. Go to Tools > Customize
  2. Click the Keyboard tab
  3. Search for a command or scroll through the list
  4. Click in the Shortcut(s) field for that command
  5. Press the new key or key combination, then click OK

The same tab has Print List and Copy List buttons — a one-click cheat sheet of every shortcut you have live right now.

Customize the S shortcut bar

The S key is more useful than most users realize. It brings up a shortcut bar that adapts to your current mode — sketch, part, assembly, or drawing — and you decide what sits on it:

  1. Press S
  2. Right-click the bar and choose Customize
  3. Drag the tools you use most into the bar

This cuts mouse travel more than any single hotkey, because it puts your top tools at the cursor in every mode.

One setup for the whole team

Shortcuts pay off twice when everyone shares them: any engineer can sit at any machine, and training a new hire takes one cheat sheet, not five. Run the Copy Settings Wizard (Tools > Save/Restore Settings) to write keyboard shortcuts, toolbars, and system options to a .sldreg file, then restore that file on each seat. Re-issue it when the standard set evolves.

Seconds per action add up. A modeler issues hundreds of commands a day, and moving even half of them from menus to keys saves hours over a week. The bigger win is staying in the flow — your eyes stay on the geometry instead of the toolbars.
